The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. In this role, she launched her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
